OxLUG Linux Day

by Dave McManus, 27/04/01

I only got this one quite late, so forgive me if you are reading it after the event, but Sunday has been designated as none other than National Linux Install Day in the UK. The idea is that people in the Linux community get together and offer their expertise to those of us who would like to install the open source operating system but are unsure about which version, or distribution, is best for them and how to actually go about getting it up and running on a computer.

I count myself as one of those people who have had trouble with Linux in the past - the Redhat (www.redhat.com) version in my case. I spent many a long hour attempting to install it on my laptop before giving up, wary of the fact that laptops are a lot easier than desktops to pick up and throw through a window in a moment of intense frustration.

I would clearly benefit from the collected expertise of the Oxfordshire Linux Users Group (http://www.oxlug.org) who will be gathering at the 22nd Oxford Scout HQ in Meadow Lane, Oxford, to commemorate the day and offer their invaluable advise.

The helpful folk of OXLUG are actually encouraging you to bring along your computers on the day for free hands-one help in disk partitioning and installation, etc. Full details of the event can be found on their site, mentioned earlier.

I'm sure they'll have much better luck with my laptop.
